YNAS

Young Navigators Star Award Scheme.
The YNAS is the junior version of the National Navigation Award Scheme, which is aimed at young people aged 8 and upwards.  Each award level engages and encourages participants to learn map reading and compass skills, and can fit alongside to help facilitate learning of national curriculum areas such as Physical Education, Geogrpahy and Maths.

Bronze Star Award – in the classroom and school grounds, map concept, symbols, drawing your own map and following a route on it.

Silver Star Award – in the gymnasium, school site local park, introducing the compass for orientation, developing spatial awareness, and following a route on a map.

Gold Star Award – following line features on the school or park map. Children organize and plan simple courses for one another, compass bearings and contour appreciation are developed.

Badges and certificates are awarded at each level to successful candidates on completion of the assessment.

The NNAS presents this scheme with the support of the British Orienteering Federation and Recta Compasses knowing that it will motivate children to develop lifelong skills in the use of map and compass and encourage more young people to enjoy outdoor sports and activities with safety and confidence.
