Kit List
For the challenges, each member of your team will need to ensure they have the following as a basic minimum. Mountain Monkeys can provide advice regarding all purchases – or we may even be able to rent you some kit from our stores at extra cost.
Walking boots – these must be worn in, so take them out on as many practice walks as you can. Buy boots suitable for walking and not shoes. Layers – it’s better to have lots of thin layers than one or two thick ones. Choose lightweight garments that are designed to let you skin breathe and wick moisture away. Depending on the time of year you’ll may need quite a few.
Socks – make sure you wear breathable walking socks that don’t rub (try them on your practice walks!). Bring a spare pair to change into for the way home.
Waterproof jacket – the weather on the peaks is very changeable and you don’t want to spend 12 hours being wet through. A lightweight, breathable, waterproof jacket with a hood is a must – speak to us if you are attempting this in the winter as you may need something heavier.
Rucksack – you’ll need something to keep your food, layers and water in. You won’t need a massive pack, 30L will be fine. Try and find a type that has straps across the front of your body as well as over the shoulders, this offers a lot more support. Try and get a pack with a rain cover or waterproofing.
Canteen or bottle – climbing mountains is thirsty work and you will need to carry water with you. This will be the heaviest item you will be carrying, but it will be the most important.
Food – you will need to supply your own food whilst on the mountains. Make sure you have enough for 12 hours of walking including high energy food such as energy bars, cereal bars and something sweet like a mars bar. Remember the weather on the peaks is very changeable, so even if we are walking in the middle of summer it may be very cold and wet on the top.
